DESCRIPTIONS:
Part one: Two nights in Fairbanks. Half-day stern-wheeler cruise down the river.
Lunch downtown at Soapy Smith's.
Part two: Mainly the train ride to Denali National Park and then Anchorage.
The silly electronic camera focused on the train windows, so many shots were unusable.
However, I was able to stand outside on the rear platform for several hours, so I did get plenty of beautiful photos.
Side story: Shortly before reaching Anchorage, the train passes just off the end of the runway at Elmendorf AFB.
Four days after we went through, a gigantic C-17 cargo jet crashed on takeoff, killing all four crewmembers.
The crash damaged the tracks. So for some time, passenger trains had to stop, put the passengers on buses, drive them past the damage and put them on another train.
Part three: Bus ride to Seward where we get onboard the boat at last! Take a few peeks at the scenery as we await our departure.
Getting 1,200 people off the boat in the morning, getting all the rooms and decks neat and clean, boarding 1,200 new passengers and all their luggage—all within the space of a few hectic hours!
And then . . . we're underway!
Part four: Now the cruise really gets exciting. Beautiful fog-shrouded islands appear and disappear along the way. We start to explore the boat and locate the Starbucks! After a luscious dinner, it's time to sip coffee on the verandah and watch the scenery slide by.
After a good night's sleep, we can't wait to open the curtains and see what's outside.
It's beautiful, but what's that crackly sound??
